A hard enamel pin is a metal lapel pin with the enamel fill polished down flush to the metal borders. The whole face feels smooth under a fingernail, not ridged. Pinmakers call this the cloisonné method. Enamel goes into metal cells one colour at a time, gets baked, then ground and polished until it sits dead level with the die-struck lines. Nothing sits proud of the surface, so there's no lip for grime or a fingernail to catch on. Nickel, black nickel and imitation gold plating come at no extra cost. Matt gold, matt nickel and matt silver cost a small upgrade if you want a brushed look instead of a mirror shine.

Most designs sit comfortably within five colours at no extra charge. Add a sixth or seventh shade and a small per-piece fee applies — this usually only matters for detailed crests or mascots.
